Day 4
Thira, Santorini
Legend has it that the island of Santorini in the Cyclades is the site of Plato's lost city of Atlantis. The extraordinary landscape of its western edge is the result of the eruption in 1450 BC of a marine volcano, the sheer cliffs of whose caldera rim climb high into the Aegean sky. You can reach the white houses of clifftop Thira Town by cable-car or donkey, while further afield Akrotiri offers a glimpse of the Minoan civilisation overwhelmed by the volcano.

Istanbul, Turkey
Built on the shores of two continents and seat of successive Byzantine and Ottoman Empires for 1,500 years, Istanbul (the Constantinople of old) is a chaotic, cosmoplitan collision of East and West, past and present.

Day 9
Odessa, Ukraine
Today this gateway to the Black Sea Riviera has a reputation as a lively artistic and cultural centre, with architectural treasures that include a trio of palaces - and a prestigious 19th century Opera House, where Tchaikovsky performed. Don't miss the shopping arcades - or bargain-price local vodka and caviar!

Day 10
Sevastopol, Ukraine
Sevastopol will forever be linked with its year-long seige and the tragic and ill-conceived Charge of the Light Brigade at nearby Balaclava that scarred the Crimean War. The Panorama exhibition in the city graphically tells the tale of the whole conflict but equally fascinating is a maritime museum centred on the port's former role as base for Russia's Black Sea fleet.

Day 12
Mykonos, Greece
Here on romantic Mykonos in the Cyclades Shirley Valentine was filmed. No wonder! The sun-bleached little capital, framed by its distinctive thatched windmills and shimmering seas, is for many the loveliest of the Aegean's island towns - sophisticated and 'chic' in mood, with a colourful waterfront, a maze of narrow streets and sugar-white, flower-decked houses.

The resulting cultural blend emanates from Palermo's buildings, art, and people.
